Plugging & Abandoning Legacy wells.

The legacy of hundreds of thousands of legacy oil wells needs addressing. Some of these are leaking into the environment hydrocarbons. Many others are slowly venting methane.

Legacy wells

The world faces a silent but urgent environmental crisis: millions of legacy oil wells, many of them improperly sealed, continue to leak hydrocarbons and release methane into the atmosphere. Methane, a greenhouse gas over 80 times more potent than CO₂ in the short term, escapes from these wells unchecked, accelerating climate change while polluting air and water. Beneath the surface, oil and brine seep into groundwater, contaminating drinking water supplies and sterilizing land, leaving communities and ecosystems at risk.

1 Billion Ton is dedicated to solving this problem by bringing together experts, industry leaders, and environmental innovators to tackle oil waste and orphaned wells at scale. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, policy advocacy, and cross-sector collaboration, we can transform this challenge into an opportunity for meaningful environmental restoration. The skills and knowledge of oil industry professionals remain crucial in this transition, ensuring that waste is properly managed, methane emissions are curbed, and contaminated sites are reclaimed. The future of sustainable energy depends not only on new technologies but also on addressing the past—one well, one site, and one billion tons at a time.

Pluggin & Abandonment

Efforts are underway to plu and abandon many of these wells.

New technologies are being developed to ensure these wells are plugged and remain safe. This requires finding the wells, using AI to search the databases containing decades old well information, monitoring ongoing success, ensuring communities are safe, and training for the right skills for the workforce.
