Industry Challenges
OIl Sludge Bags
Oil sludge waste from the shipping industry is still brought to shore in many countries in large bags. These strong bags contain the heavy viscous waste.
Removing the heavy fuel oil sludge from these bags is very hard and shredding the bags is difficult and the fibers damage and block equipment.
What is needed is a reliable, robust way to separate the oil sludge from the bags or the material the bags are made from.
Earth Observation of Oil Waste Sites
A method to identify the size and content of an oil waste site, pit or lagoon using Earth Observation data.
AI for Well & Treatment matching
Thousands of wells need plugging and abandonment treatment over the coming decades. There are many data bases with information on wells, geology and design.
However, the data are sprea dout in archaic IT systems and finding the wells that suit a particular treatment technology is a laborious process.
We need an AI solution that can scan the data on existing and legacy wells and combine this with characteristics of treatment technologies. This will speed up treatment and reduce methane emisssions and other leaks to the environment.
Key Focus Areas
Oil Waste remediation
Explore chemical, mechanical, and biological solutions, integrating innovations for drilling waste and production waste.
Data, Space & AI

Why 1 Billion Ton?
The world has a hidden problem. There is over 1 billion tons of oil waste left behind from decades of oil exploration and production. These waste sites, often ignored, pose an environmental and human health risk, sometimes contaminating land, water, and air. Despite the scale of the problem, there is no single global effort focused on addressing it. 1 Billion Ton is changing that.
By bringing together experts, companies, and innovators, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity.
Restoring landscapes, protecting communities, and preventing further environmental damage. This effort will not only safeguard nature but also create high-quality jobs in remediation, engineering, and sustainable waste management, ensuring that the skills and knowledge of industry professionals are applied to one of the big environmental issues of our time.
It’s time to act. It’s time to clean up. It’s time for 1 Billion Ton.
